MAIN GOAL:

Tourism development in peripheral rural areas has had little attention and most rural communities are not prepared to deal with structural changes in their economy.  People that live in these communities are commonly working on agriculture or fisheries, have low education and do not have the appropriate skills to establish synergetic relationships with tourists and tourism companies. So, it is critical to capitalize on the strengths that exist on these communities, especially regarding their bond with natural resources, traditional economic activities, folklore, food, festivities and rituals. Through these features, GREAT will try to identify ways to structure innovative tourism experiences in rural areas and add value to local communities, contributing to the reduction of poverty and social exclusion and to the increase in employment. The general goals are:

  • Evaluate the tourism potential of peripheral areas in the Azores;
  • Understand how to help the development of small peripheral areas in the Azores through tourism;
  • Contribute to the diversification of the tourism supply and demand in the Azores;
  • Help the development of tourism services and skills in rural areas.

DESCRIPTION:

In the GREAT project, the research will be especially oriented to the development of tourism in peripheral/remote areas, like small parishes and rural communities, which are having lesser impacts from tourism on their local economy. The aim is to study their tourism potential and ways to originate new products and experiences on the more remote areas of the islands, particularly through Nature Tourism and Rural Tourism (lato sensu).

RESULTS:

The main results to be achieved are:

  • Definition of the typical profile of the tourists that seek experiences in rural areas;
  • Identification of the tourism potential of specific peripheral rural areas in the Azores;
  • Identification of an empowerment model for farmers and fishermen to help them explore tourism through their main professional activities (ex.: agritourism and fishing-tourism);
  • Description of the principles of digital marketing to promote rural tourism in peripheral areas of the Azores;
  • Description of the tourism training needs of local leaders and entrepreneurs in small peripheral communities of the Azores.
