Descrição do Projeto:
The LIFE4FARMS project addresses water pollution caused by livestock farming, including excess nutrients, veterinary pharmaceutical residues, pathogens, and antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Its innovative Wet4Agro system is an enhanced nature-based solution that combines constructed wetlands, strategic drainage, and advanced filter materials to remove more than 70% of nitrogen and over 80% of pharmaceuticals, including antibiotics and hormones, from livestock wastewater.
Three full-scale demonstration sites will be implemented, one in the Czech Republic and two in the Azores (Portugal), treating around 40,000 m³ of wastewater per year under different climate and farming conditions. The project will also develop a Decision Support Framework to facilitate system design, operation, maintenance, and replication across Europe.
Aligned with the EU Green Deal and Circular Economy objectives, Wet4Agro offers significant environmental and economic benefits, including reduced CO₂ emissions, energy savings, increased biodiversity, and lower construction and operating costs compared to conventional wastewater treatment plants. By integrating natural treatment processes, IoT monitoring, and AI-based decision support, LIFE4FARMS aims to demonstrate a scalable and sustainable solution for improving water quality and promoting more resilient and environmentally friendly agricultural practices.
