Biography
I work in the Biotechnology field, specialized in Microbiology with focus on bacteria communities from extreme environments. I work with hot springs thermophilic bacteria from Azores, applied to wastes bioconversion for energy production and value-added products. Vast experience in the isolation and characterization of bacteria for screening thermostable enzymes (Proteases, Lignocellulases, Amilases, Keratinases or Quitinases) or antimicrobial and antitumor peptides and proteins for biological control. I also have experience in laboratory and field tests, in the production of biocontrol agents and on the construction and maintenance of bacteria biobanks (constructed the Azorean largest biobank with culturable isolates). In the last years i have specialized in Bioinformatics for phylogenetic diversity and functional genomics in the areas of Biotechnology. Also have skills in the implementation of informatic infrastructures and softwares for working with big data. I am experienced in writing creative/innovative projects relevant for the industrial market, energy efficiency or in the coordination of projects. I am interested in teaching, research, circular economy, white, blue and red Biotechnology, and promoting transfer of scientific knowledge to the industry.
