Day 24: Date of Gaspar Frutuoso's death. At 18:00 there will be an evocative ceremony in memory of Gaspar Frutuoso in Nossa Senhora da Estrela Cemetery, then at 18:30 in Largo Gaspar Frutuoso there will be a ceremony in memory of Gaspar Frutuoso followed by a mass evocative of the 500 years of his birth. Finally, at 21:30 there will be a commemorative concert at Teatro Ribeiragrandense.

The Carlos Machado Museum will open a temporary exhibition dedicated to Gaspar Frutuoso, as part of the celebrations of the 5th centenary of his birth, on Friday, August 26, at 6:30 p.m., in the Sacred Art Centre. The exhibition, entitled Gaspar Frutuoso, naturalist, seeks to highlight the contribution to the knowledge of the Natural History of the Azores that he bequeathed to us through his books Saudades da Terra.

Event

The 500th anniversary of the birth of Gaspar Frutuoso will be marked with a commemorative congress, which will take place in October on the island of São Miguel. "Gaspar Frutuoso: Different Perspectives, New Challenges" is the central theme. The purpose of the initiative is to remember that personality and the contribution he made to the various areas of knowledge of the Azores, as revealed to Atlântida by Susana Goulart Costa, a member of the organizing committee and a researcher at the CHAM - Humanities Centre of the University of the Azores.

This exhibition aims to mark the fifth centenary of the birth of Gaspar Frutuoso, an Azorean author from the island of São Miguel, and includes several dozen copies of works that are kept in the collections of the National Library of Portugal, which correspond to titles that were used or quoted by Gaspar Frutuoso in his great chronicle of the Atlantic islands, Saudades da Terra.
