Biography
Pablo Hernández-Marrero is Professor of Public Health and Health Services Research: Policy, Management and Evaluation. He is Coordinating Researcher (equivalent to Full Professor) in Public Health: Health Services Research and Health Policy at Fundação Gaspar Frutuoso and Integrated Researcher at CEEAplA, Universidade dos Açores | Fundação Gaspar Frutuoso. He is Research Coordinator at the Portuguese Nurses Association for Long-Term and Palliative Care (AECCP).
He obtained his Ph.D. in Health Services Research from the University of Toronto, Canada, in 2006; with a minor in Management in the Ph.D. in Management at the Rotman School of Management at UofT. Pablo completed a three-year Postdoctorate in Bioethics Empirical Research within an EU-funded project with a focus on research ethics and clinical dementia research. Pablo has broad international experience combining research, education, management, consulting and clinical work. He worked in Portugal, Spain, Canada, Poland, Denmark, Bolivia, Mexico, Chile and other countries.
Pablo was Visiting Researcher at the Department of Public Health and Primary Care, Leids Universitair Medisch Centrum (Netherlands), and the Hospice Seràgnoli Foundation, Accademia delle Scienze di Medicina Palliativa, Bologna (Italy), and Visiting Professor at the University of the Azores (Portugal), and at the Palliative and Supportive Care Service, Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois, Lausanne (Switzerland).
In Canada, Pablo worked for over 10 years in academic (e.g., University of Toronto) and healthcare organizations (e.g., University Health Network, Mount Sinai Hospital) where he built up a wide know-how in multiple national and international projects and organizations. He has He has extensive clinical, research and executive management experience across the continuum of services in primary care, long-term care, and large university teaching hospitals, both in Canada and Spain. He also worked as an international consultant and team leader in national and international public health and health services projects. He worked as Principal Investigator at CEGE, Ethics and Sustainability Research Area: Palliative Care Research, Universidade Católica Portuguesa.

Pablo is directly involved in the development, leadership, and sustainability of several ongoing research activities building cross-collaborations and bridges with peers in national and international fields. Pablo is WP lead/co-lead in several EU-funded projects (Horizon Europe, COST Action, and ERASMUS+) in Portugal focusing on the following topics: (i) Improved supportive, palliative, survivorship and end-of-life care of cancer patients; (ii) Novel approaches for palliative and end-of-life care for non-cancer patients; and (iii) Ethics in science with and for society.
As a health services researcher, he led and participated in national and international action and applied research conducted in the areas of cancer and immuno-oncology, palliative and end-of-life care, clinical dementia research, public health, health services outcomes and evaluation, organization sciences, precision medicine, research ethics and scientific integrity, and bioethics. His research combines the areas of health research, health services research (e.g., outcomes research, comparative effectiveness research and evaluation), implementation science, bioethics empirical research, and public health palliative and end-of-life care research; establishing micro-meso-macro linkages with justice and inequities in health aiming to improve healthcare organizations and systems making them more effective, efficient, ethical, and sustainable.
