Service Provision Description:

The most relevant environmental issue from a soil point of view is the risk of surface discharges of geothermal fluid due to possible failures of the transport and reinjection systems. Therefore, the risk of soil contamination by the action of geothermal fluid and/or geological materials resulting from drilling operations must deserve particular attention, since these products sometimes contain abnormally high levels of certain chemical elements which, from certain values of concentration and/or quantity, may negatively affect the environment, taking into account the associated ecosystems as well as the hydrological resources with which the soil establishes a natural interface.

Taking these considerations into account, the monitoring plan presented below aims to determine chemical parameters of environmental relevance, in particular some heavy metals, based on surface soil samples from areas affected by geothermal wells in Pico Alto (Terceira island).

This proposal also includes a joint interpretation of the results of soil monitoring with the information to be obtained in monitoring of water resources to be carried out in the area in question.
