Project Description:
With this project it is expected that the mechanisms underlying the etiology of infantile colic will be elucidated and that
a symbiotic formulation for the prevention and treatment of this condition is presented. After taking a
infusion of fennel seeds by the mothers, they will be asked to collect samples of their own breast milk and the
provide stool samples from your babies. Samples will be collected at the beginning and end of the intervention to identify
and quantify the specific microbiota. Breast milk and baby stool samples will also be used in the
isolation of potential probiotic bacteria. Fennel extracts will be analyzed to identify the compound(s)
responsible for the expected prebiotic effect. The digestion profiles of breast milk before and after the intervention will also be investigated, as well as the prebiotic effect of the compounds identified in the extracts of fennel and
breast milk.
