Main Objectives:
On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the subversion of Vila Franca do Campo (Azores), which took place in the early hours of October 22, 1522, the Municipality of Vila Franca do Campo and CHAM – Açores (Center for Humanities) organized an international colloquium with the objective of debating the impact that natural catastrophes, of different origin, had on human communities in the past. For this, five structuring thematic lines were defined: Natural catastrophes in History: sources for their study; Evidence of catastrophic events in the archaeological record; Natural disasters in history through the lens of natural sciences; The role of natural disasters in the construction of collective memory: past and present cases; The impact of natural disasters on social, economic and political dynamics.
