Main Objectives:

Given the growing interest in recovering the region's wine sector and the growing demand for propagation material, it is therefore urgent to initiate a phytosanitary improvement program, which is why the objective of this project is to: - Establish an in vitro collection of clones of traditional Azorean varieties (Verdelho, Arinto dos Açores and Terrantês do Pico) and rootstocks (Aranheira and Capote); - Use molecular diagnostic methods to track viral infections present in the grape varieties to be sanitized and monitor the effectiveness of the sanitation process; - Eradicate viruses with the greatest economic impact from traditional Azorean grape varieties, through in vitro thermotherapy combined with meristem preparation; - Ensure the correct identity of the grape varieties using genotyping using molecular markers; - Conserve and micropropagate elite plant material to establish mother plant fields for future production of certified material.
