Main Objectives:

The Velas Colóquios, which result from a fruitful partnership between CHAM Açores, the Santa Casa da Misericórdia das Velas, the Velas Municipal Council (S. Jorge Island, Azores) and the Francisco de Lacerda Museum, have invited the presentation of communications, the dissemination of scientific knowledge and the debate around themes associated with History, Heritage, Culture and the Arts — fundamental areas of CHAM - Humanities Center —, within the scope of studies around the island and Atlantic world, in particularly from Macaronesia. Gradually, the event gained regional and national projection, as well as an international dimension and a relevant place in the planning of UI&D activities. This year, the works, which are intended to be interdisciplinary, will be based on issues associated with the History of the Atlantic and its interaction with Memory and Visual Culture. It is intended that the role and importance of the image, as a historiographical source, symbol of post-modern culture and as a reflection of contexts, societies and everyday lives, assumes the centrality of analysis and reflections.

Project Description:

The event's main objective is the study, dissemination and appreciation of the History and Cultural Heritage, material and immaterial, of the Ibero-American Atlantic space, having a very broad target audience, covering not only science networks, but a public of young people starting their careers and also for young university students. Given the fact that the event takes place in the Azores archipelago, an integral part of the biogeographic space of Macaronesia (Azores, Madeira, Canaries and Cape Verde), we intend to bring together in this event a set of oral communications that geographically have their genesis in Island and Atlantic History , expanded and compared to the remaining Iberian overseas space, and other communities of the Portuguese-speaking and Hispanic diaspora. The works will be presented in Portuguese and Spanish with online transmission on social networks.
