João Faria is currently based at the University of Azores, Portugal, as a investigator for the Research Center in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources - Azores (BIOPOLIS-CIBIO-Açores). He holds a degree in Environmental Biology (University of Lisbon), a MRes in Biodiversity, Genetics and Evolution (University of Porto) and in 2018 he has completed a PhD in Biology at the University of Lisbon.

Marine biology

Biography

João Faria is currently based at the University of Azores, Portugal, as a investigator for the Research Center in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources - Azores (BIOPOLIS-CIBIO-Açores). He holds a degree in Environmental Biology (University of Lisbon), a MRes in Biodiversity, Genetics and Evolution (University of Porto) and in 2018 he has completed a PhD in Biology at the University of Lisbon. He has been involved in 7 research projects, either hired, as a team member or consultant. He has a total of 21 papers in international peer reviewed journals, 4 book chapters published by Cambridge University Press and Novagráfica and has presented 28 oral and poster communications in renewed symposia and/or meetings. He has been at the scientific organizing committee of four workshop/seminars. He has supervised more than 20 students/ trainees, most of them from the exchange programs ERASMUS, ERASMUS+ and EURODYSSEY, and has been a reviewer for 14 scientific journals spanning a variety of topics. He has been actively involved in interactions and partnerships with non-academic stakeholders, including publishing in the non-scientific press and producing environmental education manuals and guides. He is currently studying i) the effects of carbon dioxide seeps on marine biodiversity and species interactions, as a way to further our understanding of ocean acidification consequences; ii) the biology, ecology, and evolution of non-indigenous species, looking into characterise key transport vectors and pathways, identify determinants of invasion success, forecast spatial distribution and spread, as well as assess and predict their impacts on recipient communities.
