Biography
I am a Portuguese marine and fisheries biologist specializing in applied spatial ecology, whereby I employ rigorous analysis of empirical biological data to promote the conservation and sustainable exploitation of marine living resources. I earned my PhD in Zoology at the University of Hawaii (US) in 2007 under Fullbright, FLAD and FCT scholarships. I am a researcher at IMAR/OKEANOS - University of the Azores (Portugal) since 1997 and a guest researcher at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (US) since 2014, having published over 100 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters (86 ISI papers) scoring 29/65 H/H10 (23/47 ISI). I lead research that develops novel biotelemetric and modelling approaches to identify and incorporate essential fish habitat in the optimal design of coastal, deep sea and pelagic Marine Protected Area networks, a key issue in marine conservation. I coordinate the joint MPA task force (GAMPA) with the Azorean administration and coordinate or integrate(d) various regional, national and international (EU) projects and workshops to analyse the effects of MPAs on fish populations and fisheries yields. I integrate international specialist groups for conservation of species (IUCN) and habitats (OSPAR). At the local level, my 25+ year research experience in the field and interacting with stakeholders has rendered me recognition among peers, managers, and fishers as a key player in marine spatial planning. I have played major roles in various national and international (EU, US) projects, including PI in 8 national/regional projects and IMAR PI/WP leader in 6 EU projects. I developed a solid network of international collaborations and coordinated or participated in research cruises in the Indian, Pacific, and Atlantic Oceans. I coordinate the IMAR Biotelemetry Group and the recent European aquatic animal Telemetry Network (ETN), and have done biotelemetry/biologging developments (testing and designing new tags and sensors) together with international partners in robotics and world leading manufacturers. I have most actively contributed to the recognized position that IMAR-UAz gained internationally through research, supervision of 20+ students and undergrad/graduate teaching, developing laboratories and sea infrastructures, international networking and dissemination at international fora and the media (TV series, newspapers, radio news and shows, the internet).
