Message from the Chair of the General Council

The Gaspar Frutuoso Foundation was established by the University of the Azores on March 4, 1999 as a collective person under private law with public utility purposes, having obtained such recognition for the first time through Ordinance 674/2000, of March 13, published in the Diário da República, 2nd series, no. 92, of April 18.
Following the publication of Law 1/2012 of January 3, which determined that a census should be carried out of all national and foreign foundations with a view to their possible extinction, and Law 24/2012 of July 9, also known as the Framework Law of Foundations, which established the principles and norms by which Foundations are governed, the Government of the Republic, as a result of the positive opinion of the Regional Government of the Azores, determined that the Gaspar Frutuoso Foundation should be maintained.

This decision was of great importance to the Foundation, which has since been declared once again of public utility by order of the President of the Regional Government of the Azores, dated June 27, 2013, as well as to the University of the Azores, whose development, particularly with regard to scientific and technological research, owes much to the role played by the Gaspar Frutuoso Foundation since its creation.

Today, the Gaspar Frutuoso Foundation has a structure capable of responding to the challenges and opportunities created by the most diverse funding programs, regional, national and European, particularly under the new community framework 2030. Given its nature, it is a strategic partner of the University of the Azores in the management of research and development projects and services, and its evolution is expected to be, itself, an entity that promotes projects that serve the Academy and contribute to economic growth and the social welfare of citizens.

Twenty years after its visionary creation, the Gaspar Frutuoso Foundation continues to fulfill its mission.

Presidente do Conselho Geral
João Luís Gaspar
