Main Objectives:

The Portuguese Artificial Intelligence Conference is an international conference sponsored by the Portuguese Association for Artificial Intelligence (APPIA). The 22nd edition will take place on the island of Faial from the 5th to the 8th of September 2023 The objective of EPIA conferences is to promote research in all areas of AI, covering both theoretical/foundational issues and applications, as well as scientific exchange between researchers, engineers and professionals in related disciplines. This year, the conference will also explore the connection between AI and society, in an open debate to civil society, and will bridge the discipline to other areas of knowledge with an invitation for researchers to cross ideas and interests with AI researchers, in an interdisciplinary meeting.

Project Description:

The following events will take place at the conference: 1- AI & Society This event opens the discussion of the role of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) today and in the near future, for society in general. Representatives of society (e.g. political leaders, representatives of institutions based in Faial, the general public) will be invited to this session, together with researchers who will address the themes of AI. current on this topic. 2- Interdisciplinary Challenges Event that covers AI in its different scientific aspects, seeking to establish bridges with local researchers and awaken in the Azores the importance of the area of ​​Artificial Intelligence. For this event, it is expected the participation of local representatives of different companies, researchers from different areas where the application of A.I. it is already a necessity for the progress of science (e.g. linked to Ocean/Deep Ocean research). It is hoped that these challenges will allow for a rapprochement between companies and researchers from different parts of the world, contributing to the beginning of partnerships that can enhance the Region and help its development in the context of future projects.
