Main Objectives:

The TWISST project aims to transform waste management in tourist destinations through the use of smart technologies and the promotion of sustainable practices. Based on the use of smart waste containers and collaboration with local authorities and companies in the tourism sector, the project aims to improve the way waste is managed in areas with greater tourist affluence, reducing the environmental impact of tourism and promoting a culture of environmental responsibility among visitors. The main mission of the project is to understand waste production and disposal patterns by tourists and develop innovative strategies that encourage the appropriate use of smart containers, promoting recycling and waste reduction. TWISST will collect real-time data from smart containers to analyze types of waste and trends in recycling behavior, complementing this information with surveys aimed at tourists, hotels, local accommodation and restaurants. Based on this data, the project will create personalized initiatives, in partnership with hotels and other accommodation units, to increase the correct use of waste systems and improve the sustainability of local practices.

Project Description:

The TWISST project is co-financed by FEDER, through the Direção Regional do Planeamento e Fundos Estruturais under the Azores 2030 Program in 85% and in 15% by RAA through the Direção Regional da Ciência, Inovação e Desenvolvimento, through the PRO-SCIENTIA Incentive System.

This project aims to face the challenges of waste management in urban and tourist areas, promoting a smart and sustainable tourism model, with an innovative and sustainable approach. Using IoT technologies, such as smart containers, and encouraging the active participation of tourists and residents, the project aims to reduce waste generation, increase recycling rates and optimize collection operations.
