Main Objectives:

The project of this application falls within the priority thematic area of Agriculture, Livestock and Agroindustry, in the Strategic Priority for the Promotion of Diversification and Sustainability of Two Production Systems, an area of intervention in Animal nutrition. Although the project foresees an intervention in the area of Animal Nutrition and compost production, it is likely to be inserted in any of the 3 priority strategies. On the one hand, it is an innovation for the economic fabric of the region, framing as well as promoting relationships of innovative activities related to Agriculture. On the other hand, it is an innovation with an effect on the differentiation and enhancement of two products from the region. Finally, its implementation would have positive effects on the sustainability of two production systems.

Project Description:

Industrial use of biomass generated by invasive plant species present in Macaronesia, such as sugarcane (Arundo donax L.), or cactus (Opuntia), or cat's tail (Pennisetum setaceum), conteira (Hedychium gardnerianum) or castor bean (Ricinus communis L. ), acacia (Acacia dealbata) and frankincense (Pitiosporum undulatum). Structural characterization of the different plant species to be studied: determination of the fiber length in acid detergent, neutral detergent fiber, zinc, protein theory, also, determine the potential substances containing bioactives (antioxidants and polyphenolic compounds) in them. Tests to improve the properties of the plant material: modifications will be made to the plant material through chemical treatments to improve its composition and/or its digestibility. In vitro digestibility tests of two different materials will be performed, before and after the application of two treatments.
