Project Description:

This project aims to find the best geochemical tracers between volatile and semi-volatile elements that, detected in real time in fumaroles of active and dormant volcanoes, can warn of a possible rise in magma. The target of this study is the volcanoes of Água de Pau, on the island of São Miguel, where half of the population of the Azores and Fogo archipelago resides, in the islands of Cape Verde. The chemical elements to be monitored will be traced along the magma rise path, through a multi-analytical study of fluid and glassy inclusions and of the gases emitted in the fumaroles. Similar models will be implemented for a comparative study on the Etna volcano (Italy) which is characterized by very frequent eruptions. The work to be carried out will be carried out in collaboration with researchers from the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (Italy), the Laboratoire Magmas et Volcans (University of Clermont Ferrand) and the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris (France).
