The 2026 University of the Azores Scientific Merit Award is being held once again, an initiative promoted by the Gaspar Frutuoso Foundation in partnership with the Azores Mutual Agricultural Credit Bank.

This award aims to recognize a scientific article of high quality and international impact, published in a journal indexed in SCOPUS or Web of Science, highlighting the contribution of the University of the Azores’ scientific community to the advancement of knowledge.

Scientific Field for the 2026 Edition: Medical and Health Sciences

Prize: €6,000.00, sponsored by the Caixa de Crédito Agrícola Mútuo Açores

This award aims to recognize scientific excellence and encourage high-impact international publications in the scientific fields of the University of the Azores.

The event will take place on October 8 at 4:00 p.m. in Amphitheater A.026 on the Ponta Delgada University Campus.

S3 SUMMIT 2026: Smart Specialization Strategy

The NONAGON in São Miguel will host the S3 SUMMIT 2026 from May 27 to 29, 2026, under the theme “Outermost Regions: Territories with a Future?”.

The event will bring together institutional representatives, researchers, companies, universities, and international organizations to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the outermost regions, with a focus on innovation, sustainability, science, digital transition, and smart territorial development.

On March 4, the Gaspar Frutuoso Foundation will hold the Academic Excellence Awards Ceremony in the Aula Magna of the University of the Azores, on the Ponta Delgada Campus, to recognize the merit and achievements of students who have excelled throughout their academic careers.

The event will be attended by institutional representatives and partners from various Azorean municipalities, including Ponta Delgada, Lagoa, Vila Franca do Campo, Ribeira Grande, Povoação, Praia da Vitória, and Horta, as well as the São Miguel Agricultural Association and the Angra do Heroísmo Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and included an IDEaM Talk by Professor Armando Brito Mendes on Artificial Intelligence in Research.

The ceremony will be supported by sponsors Quintal dos Açores, O Rei dos Queijos, and Electrolaranjo, who contributed to creating a welcoming atmosphere and strengthening the connection between academia and the business sector.

This year, the total amount awarded for the Access, Academic Merit, and Scientific Merit Awards amounted to €44,000.00, underscoring the Foundation’s commitment to academic and scientific excellence.

O Guia Prático da Flora e Fauna Marinha dos Açores / Field Guide of Azorean Marine Flora and Fauna, será apresentado no dia 4 de dezembro, pelas 19h00, no Museu Carlos Machado (Núcleo de Santo André).

Os ecossistemas marinhos dos Açores são únicos e abrigam milhares de espécies classificadas em vários filos, que vão desde os pequenos cocolitóforos até às grandes baleias, com mais de 3640 espécies registadas no Portal da Biodiversidade dos Açores. Cerca de 109 dessas espécies são endémicas dos Açores, fazendo parte do seu património natural único. Uma amostra significativa da riqueza da biodiversidade marinha nos Açores, cuja extensão total continua longe de estar completamente documentada, é apresentada neste livro.

Quatro coeditores especializados em biodiversidade marinha, Ana C. Costa, Filipe Porteiro, Gui M. Menezes e João Pedro Barreiros selecionaram e elaboraram o material que se encontra caracterizado em cada uma das fichas deste Guia Prático. Um guia profusamente ilustrado com fotografias de grande qualidade, bilingue (Português e Inglês), georreferenciado, com rigor científico e em linguagem acessível ao grande público.

O volume que agora se publica encerra, com chave de ouro, a coleção de quatro guias da natureza insular do Atlântico Norte e constitui uma homenagem ao meritório trabalho levado a cabo pela Professora da Universidade dos Açores Ana Isabel Neto, precocemente falecida em 2021.

O Observatório da Juventude dos Açores (OJA) irá realizar o segundo webinar dedicado à relação dos jovens com a política, no dia 25 de outubro, das 16h00 às 17h30 (hora dos Açores).

Neste evento, propomos refletir sobre as diferentes formas de participação política e cívica dos jovens. Estão confirmadas duas comunicações. A primeira, da responsabilidade de Edna Costa, doutorada em Ciência Política pela Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade Nova de Lisboa e docente na Escola de Economia e Gestão da Universidade do Minho que apresentará os resultados do estudo sobre a Participação Política da Juventude em Portugal, financiado pela Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian. A segunda, da responsabilidade de Ana Rita Maas, doutorada em Sociologia no Instituto de Ciências Sociais da Universidade de Lisboa, que abordará os resultados da pesquisa elaborado por uma equipa do OJA.
