Project Description:

Coastal regions are widely recognized for their ecological and socioeconomic importance. one of the biggest threats to coastal ecosystems worldwide, including in Portugal, is the introduction of non-indigenous species (NEI). Maritime transport has been reported as the most likely vector for the introduction of NIS in coastal regions that can establish themselves and become invasive, negatively impacting native biodiversity. If prevented, early detection and surveillance of NIS could be essential to coordinate a timely and effective response to intrusions. The objective of this project is to develop and optimize DNA-based methodologies, in particular high-throughput sequencing, for the early detection and monitoring of NIS in Portuguese coastal waters. Actions to develop innovative tools for monitoring biodiversity are mandatory for an effective management of biological invasions and the development of mitigation strategies to deal with environmental changes.
