Biography
Ana Costa holds a degree in Faunistic Resources and Environment (University of Lisbon) and a PhD in Ocean Sciences (University of the Azores). She is currently an associate professor at the University of Azores, head of the Biology degree at the University of Azores and vice-president of the CIBIO-Açores, the Research Center in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources, based at the University of Azores. Her main research and teaching interests lie in the field of marine sciences. For the last decades, she has been actively involved in research dealing with the biology, taxonomy and ecology of marine organisms from the archipelago of the Azores, namely the study of non-indigenous species (NIS). She has 26 NIS-related papers in indexed and peer-reviewed international journals. She’s been involved in the regional NIS monitoring program within the scope of the Governmental Program for the implementation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive - Marine Invaders Program in the Azores. She has also participated in the Portuguese annual report for the ICES working group on introductions and transfers of marine organisms. She is a member of the European Commission of Experts and monitoring of the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive, descriptor 2, Non-Indigenous Species (NIS), representing the Azores region. She is a co-author of the EU document for the establishment of limit values for NIS pressure in European seas. She has coordinated and participated in several funded research projects related to NIS. She has also worked on marine and coastal planning, implementation, and monitoring of marine protected areas in the archipelago of the Azores. She has participated as a leading author or co-author on 72 papers in international peer-reviewed journals, produced 11 books and/or book chapters, and has participated in national/international marine sciences dedicated research projects and conferences/meetings. She has also been deeply involved in lecturing and teaching on all academic levels at the University of Azores (classes such as Invertebrate Biology, Biological Oceanography and Marine/Coastal Biology, Marine Biodiversity, Marine Resources and Marine Living Resources, Marine Pollution and Ecotoxicology, Marine and Coastal Environment) and she has been mentoring and supervising several MSc, PhD and post-doc students.
