The Gaspar Frutuoso Foundation will participate in Macaronight Azores 2026 as part of the University of the Azores’ Science and Innovation Hub, alongside InUAc—the University of the Azores Business Incubator—and SVCT—the University of the Azores Science and Technology Services.

Under the theme “Science Is Everywhere,” Macaronight Azores 2026 will take place from September 23 to 25 at the Pavilhão do Mar in Ponta Delgada. On September 23, 24, and 25, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., the event will welcome the school community. On September 25, from 6:00 p.m. to midnight, the venue will be open to the general public, with free admission.

Organized as part of European Researchers’ Night, the initiative aims to bring science and research closer to society by providing a space for researchers, institutions, companies, and the community to come together.

As part of the University of the Azores’ Science and Innovation Hub, the FGF joins this celebration, highlighting its role in supporting the management, promotion, and implementation of research and innovation projects, thereby helping to bring scientific knowledge closer to society and maximizing its impact.

Throughout the evening, the public will be able to visit the University of the Azores’ venue and learn about various projects, initiatives, and opportunities related to science, innovation, and research conducted in the region.

With more than fifty researchers and over 30 activities, Macaronight Azores 2026 promises to transform the Pavilhão do Mar into a vast space for discovery, sharing, and dialogue about science.

On October 8 at 5:00 p.m., the Gaspar Frutuoso Foundation will host the 2026 Scientific Merit Conference, an initiative dedicated to recognizing and promoting scientific excellence at the University of the Azores.

The third edition of the conference will feature the presentation of the 2026 University of the Azores Scientific Merit Award in the field of Medical and Health Sciences to Dr. Mafalda Raposo for her scientific work titled “Blood transcriptome sequencing identifies biomarkers able to track disease stages in spinocerebellar ataxia type 3.”

The study focuses on identifying biomarkers capable of tracking different stages of spinocerebellar ataxia type 3, contributing to a deeper scientific understanding of this genetic disease and to the development of new tools that can support its monitoring.

The study is part of the research conducted by the team led by Prof. Dr. Manuela Lima of the Faculty of Science and Technology at the University of the Azores, reflecting the contribution of scientific research carried out in the region to the advancement of knowledge in areas of particular relevance to health.

The ceremony is organized by the Gaspar Frutuoso Foundation, with support from the Azores Mutual Agricultural Credit Bank, the sponsor of the 2026 Scientific Merit Award.

Throughout the event, the role of scientific research in generating knowledge and making an impact on society will also be highlighted, reinforcing the Gaspar Frutuoso Foundation’s commitment to promoting science and the researchers at the University of the Azores.

The ceremony will take place in Amphitheater A.026, at the University of the Azores’ Science Complex, with guests being welcomed starting at 4:30 p.m. and the session beginning at 5:00 p.m.

The Gaspar Frutuoso Foundation attended the presentation session for the Iberian Network, an initiative of Fundación MAPFRE that aims to bring together foundations from Portugal and Spain and promote new opportunities for cooperation among organizations in the foundation sector.

The FGF’s participation in this initiative represents an opportunity to strengthen its network of contacts, learn about new approaches, and identify potential opportunities for collaboration and the creation of partnerships with entities from different fields and regions.

In a context where cooperation is essential for advancing knowledge and generating greater impact, participation in networks and forums for dialogue is particularly important for the FGF, as an organization dedicated to supporting research, innovation, and project development.

The Iberian Network thus serves as a platform for bringing Portuguese and Spanish foundations together, creating conditions for sharing experiences, knowledge, and best practices, as well as for developing future joint initiatives.

The FGF’s participation in this session reinforces its commitment to building new bridges, establishing strategic partnerships, and promoting cooperation as a means to amplify the impact of the projects and initiatives it supports.

As part of the event, attendees had the opportunity to participate in a discussion on the foundation sector—its structure, challenges, and evolution in Portugal and Spain—led by Ricardo Garcia, Secretary General of the Portuguese Center for Foundations, and Silverio Agea, Director General of the Spanish Association of Foundations.

The FGF’s participation in this initiative is also part of its affiliation with the CPF—the Portuguese Center for Foundations and reinforces its involvement in cooperation and development efforts within the foundation sector in Portugal and abroad.
